Marco the Manx Series
A series about Marco the Manx began in 1984 with Castaway Cat (Montevista Press), now out of print after several reprintings. The adventures of a cat that begins with a Manx cat lost on a Washington island. Marco goes on to board a disabled purse seine fishing boat (Fisherman Cat) and winds up in Alaska. There his boat is shipwrecked and Marco is rescued by local children (Alaska Cat), then given to Japanese sailors who bring him to Japan (Samurai Cat). Very popular with schools because of accurate settings. Some have equipped entire classes for study purposes.
Children send fan mail. "I rely enjoy your marko books. Are you going to write enamor?" Teachers, too: "Once again you have captured the imagination of my class." Each of the books has won state awards, and Castaway Cat won first for fiction, all kinds, from the National Association of Press Women in 1984.
